Project presentation

Since 2013, an increasing number of adolescent girls living in France have been subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM) when returning to their country of origin for holidays. In response to this emerging risk, Excision Parlons-En, a network of organisations working to combat female genital mutilation, launched a large-scale prevention campaign targeting adolescent girls, a group that had previously received little attention.

The campaign aims both to explain FGM to young people, raise awareness that they may be concerned, and inform them about available support and protection options. Tailored tools were developed to reach as many girls as possible, including videos, social media content and a dedicated website. A conference organised in October 2016 also helped raise awareness among professionals before the campaign was launched from January to June 2017.

The association

Excision Parlons-en is a French network created in 2013 that brings together associations and professionals committed to preventing female genital mutilation (FGM) and protecting affected girls and women.

The network brings together complementary expertise in the fields of health, women’s rights, asylum, education and justice. Through awareness-raising actions, advocacy and the creation of tools adapted to different audiences, EPE works to break the silence surrounding FGM, inform young people and strengthen prevention and support systems for those at risk.

In 2017, with the support of the Foundation, EPE launched the “Alerte Excision” campaign, aimed at teenagers, using modern communication tools (videos, posters, social media and a website), as well as a confidential online chat service allowing girls and their families to ask questions and receive secure support
