Project presentation
In Senegal, to reduce the use of fossil fuels (wood and charcoal), which contribute to deforestation and the depletion of natural resources, the government launched the Plan Sénégal Émergent in 2015. The plan aims to increase the share of renewable energy to 15% of the country's energy mix by 2025.
In support of this initiative, Le Partenariat has been implementing a Renewable Energy Access Programme since 2017 in partnership with the Saint-Louis Regional Development Agency and the NGO GERES.
The programme aims to install alternative energy platforms (solar power and biogas) at the Cas-Cas site, benefiting 456 women market gardeners, and at the Mbiddi site, benefiting 100 women market gardeners. These platforms address energy challenges by providing sustainable energy sources to irrigate crops through solar-powered pumping systems and to produce biogas for equipment used to preserve and process agricultural products. The biodigestate (the residue produced through anaerobic digestion) is used as compost.
Women also receive training on how to operate the energy platforms, develop food preservation and processing activities (such as jams, flour and milk products), and use biodigestate to improve agricultural yields.
