Project presentation
In Afghanistan, women face gender-based discrimination, have limited access to education, and live on the margins of society. Since 2003, Afghanistan Libre has been managing four Health Education Centres (HECs) located within four schools in the Panjshir region and the Paghman district of Kabul, areas lacking educational and social healthcare facilities. These HECs provide information on health-related issues and offer spaces where women can freely exchange and share experiences.
Building on the success of the HECs (in 2017–2018, nearly 200 women were welcomed and more than 700 hygiene kits were distributed), the organisation plans to transform these centres into “Women’s Houses” in order to provide a wider range of services. In addition to the existing health education sessions, psychosocial support will be offered through group and individual sessions led by psychosocial counsellors and social workers. Afghanistan Libre will also provide one-year sewing training programmes and support women in creating income-generating activities. Finally, community awareness sessions, particularly targeting men, will be organised.
This project will strengthen not only women’s health capacities but also their psychosocial and economic empowerment, contributing to the greater integration of women into Afghan society.
