Project presentation
In rural areas of Tamil Nadu in southern India, climate change—particularly drought and soil degradation—combined with regional economic isolation, has increased the vulnerability of local populations. Women are especially affected, as they often have limited qualifications and face gender-based discrimination.
In partnership with the local NGO Gramium, which works closely with community members, Objectif France Inde (OFI) supports the creation and strengthening of women’s self-help groups (Joint Liability Groups – JLGs) composed of women living below the poverty line.
Through this project, OFI and Gramium aim to enhance the skills, autonomy and resilience of women farmers in the region. The initiative promotes financial independence by facilitating access to government-subsidised microcredit schemes, while also fostering personal and social empowerment and strengthening household food security.
Previously implemented with the NGO SEVAI, this initiative replicates a programme that has been running for over 20 years in rural communities and has enabled 175,000 women to lift themselves out of poverty.
