Project presentation

In the Jacmel Valley and Bainet, a mountainous and hard-to-reach region in southeastern Haiti, residents mainly rely on agriculture, livestock farming, and handicrafts for their livelihoods. Due to drought, deforestation, and natural disasters, rural communities face many challenges that affect both their harvests and their living conditions.

To address these issues, Habitat-Cité, together with its partner OJUCAH, launched a project to create edible forests, led by women from local communities. The goal is to combat deforestation and diversify food crops. An edible forest is a forest ecosystem where trees, climbing plants, vegetables, fruit trees, and medicinal plants grow together.

Four women are specifically supported by OJUCAH through training and personalized mentoring to create edible forests. They will then share their knowledge with other women in their communities. Activities aimed at young girls are also planned to raise awareness about environmental and gender issues.

Habitat-Cité
The association

Founded in 2003, Habitat-Cité works on housing in its broadest sense. Its activities focus on improving access to housing for vulnerable populations and providing comprehensive support, including economic projects, access to rights, and social assistance. The organization operates in both urban and rural areas, in France and internationally, without geographical priority.

Abroad, Habitat-Cité works with populations living in slums or precarious housing, with particular attention to the most marginalized groups. In Haiti, the organization collaborates with OJUCAH on projects related to agriculture, the environment, housing, and gender equality.
