Today, women account for approximately 25% of farm managers in the agricultural sector. Despite their growing presence in rural France, women farmers continue to struggle to have their work recognised and their voices heard. They remain underrepresented in governance bodies, are still too often affected by a gendered division of labour within farms, and lack access to the training and tools needed for professional fulfilment and skills development.

The National Federation of Organic Agriculture (FNAB) works to improve the status of women in organic farming and undertakes initiatives to strengthen and enhance the role of women organic producers. In 2018, the Federation conducted a study whose findings formed the basis for the launch, in September 2018, of the
“Women & Organic Farming” project, aimed at reinforcing women’s place within the organic agriculture sector.
This project received support from the Foundation from the outset. The grant notably contributed to the publication of a guide to support women setting up in agriculture, the creation of a theatre-forum targeting young people, and the delivery of training programmes on gender equality. These initiatives helped establish a network of equality ambassadors—both women and men—who now act as awareness-raising relays and regularly engage with a wide range of audiences.
The second phase of the project, launched in 2020, sought to strengthen the impacts observed since 2018 and to further encourage the momentum generated among FNAB member farmers. The project has also fostered greater internal awareness and a commitment to improved representation of women within the Federation’s governance bodies.
