Project presentation
In Benin, in the municipality of Kpomassè (located 50 km from Cotonou), tomato farming is one of the country’s most important market gardening activities. Due to the lack of preservation solutions, surplus harvests during the peak season (July to September) are discarded and wasted. This is followed by periods of scarcity during which tomatoes become rare and expensive, limiting year-round access.

Following a field study with local women and a pilot testing phase, the Association Humanitaire pour l’Afrique (AHPA), together with its local partner CRIPADD (Circle for Research, Identification and Promotion of Sustainable Development Alternatives), aims to support 80 women in developing tomato processing and preservation activities to add value to surplus production.
The project includes training in tomato preservation, the creation of a tomato processing unit for preserves and juices, the establishment of a distribution system, skills development and support towards collective organisation. This initiative will enable women to secure and diversify their income sources through the valorisation of unsold agricultural produce.
