Project presentation
For the past 15 years, in the Goutte d’Or neighbourhood of Paris, the NGO Chaussettes Solidaires has been offering sewing and garment repair workshops to women living in precarious situations, particularly those accommodated in emergency shelters (Centres d’Hébergement d’Urgence – CHU). Some of the repairs are carried out using socks collected from companies and schools.
Several of these women have expressed a desire to receive professional training in sewing in order to make it their occupation and break free from long-term precarity. While training programmes already exist, they are often spread over long periods (for example, one class per week) or are not suited to this audience, due to a lack of close supervision and tailored support.
To meet this need, the association has developed short, intensive training programmes lasting six months. These programmes enable women to acquire technical sewing skills while becoming familiar with workplace norms and expectations, thereby facilitating their integration into the labour market.
