Low-Tech & Refugees by and for Women
Projet soutenu Project supported in 2023 – Women & Environment Programme

Project presentation

Low-tech solutions are simple technical approaches that address basic needs (access to energy, food, mobility, etc.), are accessible (both economically and in terms of know-how), and environmentally friendly (using local, recycled, or bio-based materials, low-energy, low-pollution, etc.).     EKO! shares these ecological solutions and skills with displaced persons who live in constantly changing environments that require ongoing adaptation. To achieve this, the organisation runs the Low-Tech & Refugees project, initiated in refugee camps on the Greek island of Lesbos in 2018, and now implemented in Briançon (a mountainous area on the French-Italian border) and Marseille (a Mediterranean city also facing major reception, waste, and environmental challenges). Given the extreme vulnerability of displaced women, EKO! focuses on integrating them into its low-tech workshops and training sessions. The project aims to empower these women, enabling them to showcase their skills while gaining dignity and autonomy.

The association

Founded in 2019 by Marjolaine Bert and recognised as a public-interest organisation, EKO! develops positive and innovative sustainable and solidarity-based projects. It promotes individual and collective growth and resilience while respecting nature and cultures. The Low-Tech & Refugees project enhances the resilience and autonomy of displaced persons while contributing to sustainable development through the dissemination of low-tech skills and systems. EKO! operates in three key territories along migration routes: the Greek island of Lesbos, Marseille, and Briançon.
