In France, clothing production doubled between 2000 and 2014. Today, 680,000 tonnes of textiles are placed on the market each year. At the end of the cycle, only 40% of these garments, linens, or shoes enter recovery or recycling channels. The remaining 60% are either incinerated or sent to landfills, representing a significant source of pollution.

Since its inception, Emmaüs France has collected, sorted, and upcycled the textiles discarded by consumers each year. These activities are carried out through social and professional integration workshops and enterprises focused on textile upcycling, employing people in socially and economically vulnerable situations. Over time, Emmaüs France has observed a shift in the profile of beneficiaries, with women and families increasingly among those supported, whereas historically men were predominant.
In response to these environmental and social challenges, Emmaüs France launched the
Façon Emmaüs project. This initiative aims to consolidate and expand social integration workshops focused on textile upcycling—transforming clothing destined for recycling into new, high-quality creations—primarily targeting women.
