A study revealing the structure and growth of anti-rights movements in Europe
In 2024, the Fondation RAJA-Danièle Marcovici supported the study “The New Wave,” conducted by Neil Datta, Executive Director of the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual & Reproductive Rights. This report documents the rapid and structured rise of anti-gender and anti-rights movements in Europe, which raised USD 1.18 billion between 2019 and 2023—representing a dramatic increase compared to the previous decade.
The study highlights a profound transformation: these movements, once confined to conservative religious circles, now operate at a transnational level, with political allies, think tanks, and coordinated strategies. Their objective is to influence legislation, shape institutions, and durably restrict fundamental rights—particularly the sexual and reproductive rights of women and gender minorities.
This report provides a clear overview of anti-rights movements in Europe, their methods of action, and their organizational structures, thereby helping to better protect fundamental rights.
“The New Wave” perfectly illustrates the approach of the Fondation RAJA-Danièle Marcovici: producing and sharing strategic knowledge to support women’s rights and equality, in a context where these gains remain fragile and require constant vigilance.
