Project presentation

Madagascar ranks as the 10th most vulnerable country to climate change. With an average temperature increase of 0.7°C since 1960, the country has experienced prolonged droughts, frequent cyclones, and erratic rainfall. Approximately 90% of the population depends directly on agriculture, exposing millions to food insecurity. Furthermore, massive deforestation has worsened the effects of climate change, with more than 40% of forest cover lost between 1950 and 2010.

The project takes place in Ambovombe, Androy, one of the poorest (91% of the population lives below the poverty line) and driest regions of the country, where over 2 million people are threatened by famine due to drought. The organization GreenNkool aims to increase the engagement of women-led civil society organizations in environmental protection while combating gender-based violence.

This will be achieved through the creation of a low-tech research lab for water desalination, the production of spirulina, and the establishment of a resilient arboretum managed by women’s associations.

The association

GreenNKool was founded in 2016 by Marie Christina Kolo, a climate activist, ecofeminist, and social entrepreneur from Madagascar. In 2021, she received the Martine-Anstett Award for her commitment to human rights and was named one of the 100 most influential women in the world by the BBC in 2022. The association’s mission is to develop impact-driven entrepreneurship, particularly by training civil society organizations.
