Project presentation

In remote rural areas of Tamil Nadu in southern India, women from lower castes and marginalised ethnic communities are disproportionately affected by climate change and economic exclusion.

In partnership with its local partner Gramium, OFI is establishing 100 new women-only self-help groups (Joint Liability Groups – JLGs) composed of women living below the poverty line. These groups receive tailored training and access to a €2,000 microcredit loan to develop income-generating activities such as crop cultivation, livestock rearing or tailoring.

The project also includes collective actions to improve water management and soil quality, notably through the rehabilitation of water tanks and the planting of food crops. The overarching objective is to strengthen women’s food security, financial independence and leadership within their communities.

The association

Founded in 1998, Objectif France Inde (OFI)  is a French international solidarity organisation working to promote access to education, rural development and women’s empowerment in two states in southern India. The organisation relies on a team of three employees and benefits from strong field expertise, reinforced by the long-term presence of its director in India for over 30 years.

Its long-standing partner, Gramium, specialises in the establishment of women’s self-help groups and water access projects. Together, they implement structural initiatives designed to enable women to sustainably lift themselves out of poverty.
