Project presentation
In remote rural areas of Tamil Nadu in southern India, women from lower castes and marginalised ethnic communities are disproportionately affected by climate change and economic exclusion.
In partnership with its local partner Gramium, OFI is establishing 100 new women-only self-help groups (Joint Liability Groups – JLGs) composed of women living below the poverty line. These groups receive tailored training and access to a €2,000 microcredit loan to develop income-generating activities such as crop cultivation, livestock rearing or tailoring.
The project also includes collective actions to improve water management and soil quality, notably through the rehabilitation of water tanks and the planting of food crops. The overarching objective is to strengthen women’s food security, financial independence and leadership within their communities.
