Taking Action Against Gender-Based and Sexual Violence in Eastern French Guiana

Project presentation

In eastern French Guiana, gender-based and sexual violence has reached alarming levels, exacerbated by isolation, poverty, and deep gender inequalities. In Saint-Georges de l’Oyapock, a small town on the Brazilian border, women’s voices are often silenced by taboos and the lack of appropriate support services.

To address these challenges, ID Santé developed the Oyapock Health Cooperation – Empowerment (OCS-Empowerment) project. The program aims to prevent gender-based and sexual violence, improve early identification, and support survivors through a comprehensive system of mediation, listening, and psychological assistance. Through outreach activities, drop-in services, group workshops, and fieldwork led by multilingual local mediators, the project helps women recognize the violence they experience, access their sexual and reproductive health rights, and rebuild their lives within a supportive, community-based environment.

The association

Founded in 2016, ID Santé is a French-Guianese association working to promote health and access to sexual and reproductive rights in the cross-border area between France and Brazil. It coordinates the Oyapock Health Cooperation program in partnership with the Cayenne Hospital Center and several local stakeholders. In 2021, the organization opened the Caz’ID community center, a space for welcome, listening, and prevention that is now at the heart of its activities. With a team of 9 staff members, including two mediators from local communities, an annual budget of €770,000, and strong territorial roots, ID Santé works in close proximity to local populations.
