Project presentation

In Kendari, a coastal city in Indonesia, plastic waste pollutes rivers and shorelines due to the absence of a public waste management system. To address this environmental and social emergency, Naturevolution trains and supports women from coastal villages in setting up an income-generating activity focused on the collection, sorting and sale of plastic waste, enabling them to secure a stable source of income.

The collected waste is purchased by the association’s local branch and processed in its shredding workshop. At the same time, awareness-raising activities, clean-up campaigns and composting initiatives are carried out in villages and schools. The objective is to build a local waste recovery value chain while promoting the economic empowerment of women in a highly patriarchal social context.

Naturevolution Key figures

30

women trained each year in waste collection and sorting.

70 %

of the waste generated in Kendari is organic, opening up opportunities for the development of composting initiatives.

300 kg

of plastic collected per woman per week, for around €60 (higher than the average local wage).
