Projet soutenu Project supported in 2021 : Empowering Women

Project presentation

In the Maisons d’Arrêt et de Correction (MAC) in Senegal, overcrowding and poor detention conditions often undermine the fundamental rights of detainees. This situation particularly affects women, many of whom are incarcerated for having undergone abortion, which is illegal in Senegal. These women often suffer from insufficient consideration of their specific needs and from a lack of support for their reintegration into society.

The project of the Futur au Présent association aims to provide comprehensive support to women prisoners in four MAC facilities by acting simultaneously on their living conditions in detention, their psychosocial situation, and the challenges of reintegration after their release from prison. This support seeks to enable them to access and assert all of their rights.

Futur Au Présent
The association

Founded in 2012 by a Senegalese social worker and a French teacher-researcher, Futur Au Présent develops comprehensive programs to fight inequality and poverty in Senegal. Its activities are organized around three main areas: social programs, an economic activities unit that helps fund field projects, and a research division, in partnership with the Institute for Research on Development (IRD) and Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor.
