Project presentation

In the Maisons d’Arrêt et de Correction (MAC) in Senegal, overcrowding and poor detention conditions often undermine the fundamental rights of people in custody. This situation particularly affects women, who are frequently incarcerated for having had an abortion—illegal in Senegal—and who suffer from insufficient consideration of their specific needs and a lack of support for their reintegration.

The project implemented by the association Futur au Présent aims to provide comprehensive support to women detainees in four MAC facilities, simultaneously addressing their living conditions in detention, their psychosocial situation, and the challenges of reintegration after their release from prison. This support seeks to enable them to access and assert their full range of rights.

Futur Au Présent
The association

Founded in 2012 by a Senegalese social worker and a French researcher, Futur au Présent develops comprehensive programs to combat inequality and poverty in Senegal. Its activities are structured around three areas: social programs, an economic activities unit that helps finance field projects, and a research unit, developed in partnership with the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) and Université Assane Seck de Ziguinchor.
