Women & Environment Program: 10 Years of Commitment to Women’s Rights and Planetary Protection
Since 2015, the Women & Environment program has been supporting associations in France and abroad that work simultaneously for women’s rights and environmental protection.
In ten years, more than 160 projects have been funded in 39 countries, led by women who are inventing, experimenting, and passing on solutions to environmental challenges.
The Public Award is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on 5 outstanding projects competing this year.
Discover the 5 Competing Projects
- Association Humanitaire pour l’Afrique (AHPA) – Benin
Project: Training women salt producers in environmentally friendly solar methods.
In coastal villages around Ouidah, Benin, women salt producers face threats to their livelihoods due to the ban on cutting mangroves and the environmental impacts of traditional practices.
AHPA is helping 40 producers transition to eco-friendly solar techniques while strengthening their collective organization and economic independence.
With the People’s Choice Award, they could develop new products and boost their resilience.
- En Terre Indigène – French Overseas Territories
Project: Preserving ancestral ecological knowledge of women through intergenerational workshops.
The project “From Mother to Earth” highlights ancestral ecological knowledge of women in France’s overseas territories through intergenerational transmission.
These practices—essential to preserving biodiversity, water, and food security—are now under threat.
With the award, the organization could disseminate these practices more widely, create educational kits, and host a symposium in the Caribbean.
- Geres – Morocco
Project: Supporting the creation of a sustainable stove industry designed by and for women.
In Morocco, many women still use traditional stoves that consume large amounts of wood, harming both health and the environment.
Geres helps women’s groups promote and distribute high-efficiency eco-friendly stoves, designed by and for women, and sold locally.
With the award, these women could strengthen their green entrepreneurship and give more households access to sustainable solutions.
- Rejoué – France
Project: Promoting women’s professional inclusion through training in toy reuse and refurbishment.
The Rejoué integration project trains women distant from the workforce in toy reuse and refurbishment.
In addition to reducing waste, this initiative helps develop logistical, digital, and creative skills while building self-confidence.
With the award, Rejoué could expand its training programs and share its methods with other social enterprises.
- WECF France – Colombia
Project: Supporting women from disadvantaged neighborhoods in Bogota in professionalizing waste recycling.
In Bogota, many women from marginalized backgrounds make a living from waste recycling under precarious and discriminating conditions.
This project, led by WECF France and Enda Colombia, supports these women in professionalizing recycling, enhancing their rights, and gaining recognition as environmental agents.
With the award, they could improve their working conditions and achieve greater social recognition.
