Project presentation
In the Sinjar region of northern Iraq, Yazidi women continue to bear the consequences of the genocide perpetrated by the Islamic State in 2014. Thousands of them were subjected to slavery — including sexual slavery — extreme violence, and forced displacement. Even today, survivors face deep trauma, the loss of loved ones, and long-lasting social rejection within their community.
The association Hope Makers Organization For Women, founded by Yazidi gynecologist Dr. Nagham Nawzat Hasan, runs the program A Safe Future for Society, which provides comprehensive support to women survivors and their children in the Sinjar region. In response to limited access to healthcare caused by geographic isolation and mobility constraints, the organization is opening a second reception and care center.
Beneficiaries receive individualized support including medical follow-up, psychological assistance, legal counseling, and collective activities that promote social and emotional recovery. Educational and professional activities — such as English and computer courses or group workshops — also help combat isolation and strengthen participants’ autonomy. A dedicated transportation service facilitates access to the center for the most vulnerable women.
